Touristic opportunities

What is Maramures? It has been defined as: Maramures - a world apart although quite in the geographical centre of Europe, a unique civilisation of wood and stone. A space upon which Divinity has generously rained so much goodness, warthiness and beauty over its people that they shall survive as themselves for all time despite of the adversities of history.

Flamingo Pension is located right in the middle of Maramures, being the closest point to all the most important touristic targets. Following there are only a few of them...

In winter, Flamingo has a chalet in Borsa resort, a perfect place for skiing. It is located at the foot of the Rodna Massif and is an attractive resort throughout the year. Several ski runs cover a 1000 metre-high slope. There are also a few cross ski routes of 4 to 6 km long. Of the two ski jump slopes, each 80 m long, one is Europe's highest natural ski jump. The main ski run is 1920 m long, 497 high and is outfitted with chair lift and ski tow.

The transport to Borsa is assured by Flamingo.

The Festival of Winter Traditions and Secular Customs. This unique show, of a rare bauty, can be seen at the end of every year in Sighetu Marmatiei. Considered to be one of the oldest folk celebrations the dance of the mask is, at the same time, a very important custom.

The Masks imitate the head of an animal - goat, sheep -with rich ornaments, ribbons and tassels. Beside the masks, some mummers play the "devils", wearing on the head the so-called "devil's fur caps". These fur caps are huge busbies, down to their shoulders, with holes for the eyes and mouth. They also have a rabbit's ears, ram's horns, a funny imitation of nose and a long tongue.

Sapanta. In Sapanta, the traveller receives one of the most beautiful lessons of life, from the people here. Their ancestors considered death as a beginning, and not the end. This faith is still present today.

"The happy cemetery" - here is proof of this faith. People welcome death more with joy, rather than sorrow. So the inscriptions of the dead person's life, with satirical verses, describing the main events of their life.

The life philosophy of the Maramures area is "to laugh about sorrow".

Here, the traveller can also find the fine "carpets of Sapanta". The threads are spun with a big spindle, and then woven manually on a loan. In summer and winter, these carpets can be seen in the yards of the houses. The women can also be seen spinning or weaving as they prepare the future brides' dowry chest.

Wooden churches. Sighetu Marmatiei is surrounded by numerous wooden churches, which are, as a matter of fact, the highest wooden buildings in the world.
